Channel 4 issues George Gilbey statement after Gogglebox star dies suddenly

Channel 4 has paid tribute to Gogglebox star George Gilbey after his death was announced. The channel said Mr Gilbey, who has tragically died aged just 40, was “part of the Gogglebox family”.

His death was announced on Wednesday and is understood to have happened following a workplace-related accident. Mr Gilbey joined the Gogglebox sofa with his mum and step-dad back in its second series in 2013 and quickly became popular with viewers. They were taken off the show in 2014 before making a successful return two years later.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday: “George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and step-dad Pete. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George’s family and friends at this very sad time. The family have asked for privacy.”

As well as his popularity on Gogglebox, Mr Gilbey was a Celebrity Big Brother contestant on the show’s 14th series in 2014 and made it to the final. Tributes poured in for him in the wake of today’s announcement including from fellow TV personality Ricci Guarnaccio, who entered the Big Brother house in 2014 with him, and wrote: “Breaks my heart but George Gilbey you are well and truly going to be missed my friend.
