Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, on Tuesday flagoff the first cargo movement on the Lagos-Ibadan rail corridor, nearly two years after the former President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the project.

Facilitated by Buen Logistics at the APMT in Apapa, three coaches, consisting of 30 wagons, took off along the 157-kilometers rail corridor to Moniya in Ibadan, which is the terminal point of the Lagos-Ibadan rail.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) plans to begin with three coaches per day, with the agency noting that it had the capacity to increase the numbers.

This initiative aims to alleviate congestion at the Apapa port, which handles a significant portion of Nigeria’s exports and imports in the First Quarter (Q1) of 2022 (92.28% of exports and 60.77% of imports).

Executive Director, Buen Logistics, Mazi Jetson Nwankwo, said :

“What we want to achieve under your regime is to decongest Apapa Ports and all the flyovers that have container trucks littering all over. By the time we move three trains a day, Lagos would be free for a good ride. We are happy this is happening under your tenure.”

Last week, the latest rail transportation data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that the volume of goods/cargos transported through rail in the Second Quarter (Q2) of 2023 stood at 56,029 tons, compared to 31,197 tons recorded in Q2 2022.

In terms of revenue generation, N188.03 million was collected from goods/cargos conveyed through rail in Q2 2023, up by 105.04% from N91.70 million received in Q2 2022.
