Kari Lake’s Home State Newspaper Trashes Her Over Border ‘Chaos’

U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, an Arizona Republican, was criticized by her home state newspaper in an opinion piece asserting that she wants “chaos” along the U.S.-Mexico border to help Donald Trump‘s presidential bid.

The Arizona Republic published the op-ed on Wednesday with the headline, “Donald Trump and Kari Lake desperately want chaos, not solutions, at the border,” by columnist EJ Montini. The piece added that some Republicans are “putting Trump over party, and then putting party over country.”

Newsweek reached out via email on Wednesday evening to representatives for Lake and Trump for comment, and also attempted to contact Montini.

Lake, who is endorsed by the former president in her bid for U.S. Senate, previously launched a failed gubernatorial bid. She has claimed, while lacking evidence, that her November 2022 loss to Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs was the result of election fraud. Lake has made controlling illegal immigration on the Arizona border one of her key talking points during her Senate campaign.

Congress had worked to create a bipartisan bill to address what Republicans have dubbed a “border crisis” amid an uptick in migrants entering the country. There were more than 2.4 million encounters at the border during the 2023 fiscal year, up from roughly 1.7 million in 2021, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

However, the GOP-led House does not appear to support the bill put forth by a bipartisan group of senators, with conservatives arguing the measure would not go far enough to curb illegal immigration. House Speaker Mike Johnson previously said the Senate deal would be “dead on arrival” in the lower chamber.

The Arizona Republic column blasts Trump, the GOP front-runner for the presidential nomination, and Lake, saying the MAGA leader and his allies are putting his campaign before the needs of the nation.

“A bipartisan deal to address the border problem is the best thing for the country,” Montini wrote in his column. “But it is the worst thing for Donald Trump, who has made the border crisis the key element—if not the only element—of his campaign. The same is true of sycophants like U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, who follows, head bowed, in Trump’s footsteps.”

The Republic columnist said that some Republicans “want and “need the chaos” at the border.

President Joe Biden, Trump’s likely rival in November, has said he is ready to sign the bipartisan measure aiming to tackle issues at the border.

“Trump and Lake, along with their Republican enablers in the House, don’t want that to happen,” Montini wrote. “They know that such a deal could begin to alleviate the border crisis, which would be a huge win for the country. But they fear it also might be perceived as a win for Biden.”
