The 20-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils, but did score for the first team in a friendly against Leeds in pre-season and has been scoring regularly for the Under-18 and Under-21 sides since joining from Sunderland in 2020.

Hugill has been on the fringes of Erik ten Hag’s first team, making it on the substitutes’ bench in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup earlier this week.

The striker spent a spell on loan at National League side Altrincham last season, scoring once.

The new deal for the young forward extends his stay at Old Trafford until 2026 with an option for a further year beyond that.

On the announcement of the new contract, Manchester United said of Hugill: ‘He has developed well this season and trained regularly with the first team, while being on the bench four times, including for Monday night’s Emirates FA Cup third-round victory at Wigan Athletic.’

According to reports, Hugill is expected to move to League One side Burton Albion on loan this month after signing his new deal with the Red Devils.

Burton are sitting 17th in the third tier under manager Gary Mills.
